Drs. Mei Chung Ping:"Freshwater ecosystems fulfil a number of ecosystem functions, varying from the provision of drinking- and process water, nutrient cycling, waste treatment, sediment transport and retention, habitat, fish production, recreation, shipping etc. A lot of these functions are considered as essential when we want to reach the sustainable development goals and should therefore be protected. However the functioning of freshwater ecosystems is hampered by different types of stressors, like the construction of dams, morphological alterations, eutrophication and pollution. All these stressors have also a significant impact on the biodiversity in lake basins. Within this research project the objective is to identify the influence of land use/land cover change for the ecosystem functions on a lake basin scale-Poyang Lake Basin in China. The outcome of the project can help local water managers to optimize their monitoring strategies but also to implement adequate measures to protect or improve the ecosystem functioning and biodiversity on a lake basin scale."
