IMDO organises and coordinates several interdisciplinary environmental study programmes with an overall educational finality leading to polyvalent experts in environmental matters. Other courses are offered in a dedicated version for training of professionals. Their part time concept allows attendance for complementary training or completion without interruption of the professional career. The education is strongly focused on the capacity building of students and professionals of different kind. All education offered by the Institute has a orientation of sustainable development.

The social sciences are an essential part of the studies. Lecturers of the faculties of social and political sciences, economics and law teach the basic or specialised knowledge for a better understanding and solving of environmental and SD-questions. Moreover, in order to offer a high quality standard in education, the IMDO has established a network across all disciplines existing of academics and senior professionals in the field. The multidisciplinary input promotes the communication between the scientific disciplines contributing to the analysis, prevention and solution of all issues concerned.

One of the objectives of the IMDO is the dissemination of environmental sciences to different actors in society in order to  enhance public attention for environmental care. Educational programmes and courses to well-defined target groups in society such as civil servants, teachers and managers meet this objective.
