Nuha, Yaser, Aser, Bassam, Abdalmajid and Nay began this academic year on a scholarship for student refugees for the Dutch Language Year course at Linguapolis. Their aim? To learn Dutch in one year and then go on to study in Dutch-speaking higher education.
In this way, these refugees will become the engineers, pharmacists and programmers of tomorrow.
Some young refugees arriving in Belgium are keen to start or continue their higher education. This is often necessary to ensure that the qualification they hold from their home country is recognised by the labour market here.
For most courses in Flanders, this means first learning Dutch to B2 level. It is a long process, for which Linguapolis has designed an intensive Language Year. This is followed by a degree programme at a university or university college.
With a Flemish qualification, these refugees will eventually find a job that matches their ambitions and talents.
Why are scholarships needed?
The Dutch Language Year is a full-time study programme, but it is not a state-funded course. Candidates go through a selection process and scholarships are awarded based on the amount of funds raised.
The enrolment fee for a refugee student is 4,895 euros.
