Atatürk Kültür Parkı (Antalya, Türkiye)
Drivers of construction
In Antalya, flood risk is particularly high in the city centre and the coastal areas to the east of the Gulf. The areas most affected by heavy rainfall are the low-lying coastal regions. Between 1975 and 2020, 161 flood events occurred, the majority of which took place after 2004. Additionally, rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall are increasing the frequency of drought years, which could affect water resources and increase the risk of forest fires.
On November 2024, the ‘Sponge City Antalya’ Symposium was held in collaboration with the Chamber of Landscape Architects. One of the parks that is being designed is the Atatürk Kültür Parkı (Atatürk Culture Park). This park as meant to capture, store and filter sudden urban runoff from heavy storms, protecting the downstream infrastructure and coastal cliffs.
