Iron lung in the S building, Drie Eiken Campus (March 2020)

In the entrance hall of the S building at the Drie Eiken Campus an iron lung is on display. This artificial lung is a type of breathing machine that was in use during the polio epidemic from 1950 to 1960. The paralyzed patient was placed in the artifical lung, with only his head sticking out. By creating negative pressure around the body, the chest of the patient would rise, thus simulating breathing. The remarkable thing about this 'iron' lung is that it is actually made of wood.

Tablet press in building A, Drie Eiken Campus (January 2019)

At the groundfloor of building A at the Drie Eiken Campus a twentieth-century compression machine for tablets is on display. The machine was in use at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences. This machine to make pills was manufactured in 1950 and can produce 50 tablets per minute. A description of this machine (in Dutch) can be found on the ETWIE website.

Wall charts in the biology labs, Drie Eiken Campus (October 2018)

In the biology labs (O.303 and O.314) of the Drie Eiken Campus eight wall charts are on display on the walls since the beginning of October 2018. These wall charts come from the Faculty of Science, Department of Biology collection.

Scientific Instruments at the Groenenborger Campus (May 2018)

In 2017, the University of Antwerp received a collection of scientific instruments from the Gevaert-archive, including a few microscopes, density meters, a surface tension meter and a viscosity meter. Together with instruments from the former ‘Rijksontledingslaboratorium’ (a food control laboratory in the Verlatstraat) and a special nineteenth-century polarimeter from the pharmacy laboratory Van Melckebeke (Kipdorpvest), the instruments from the Gevaert archives form the exhibition 'Antwerp as a scientific knowledge center in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries'.

This exhibition was on display from 2 May 2018 until 31 October 2019 in the 'In De Kijker' room at Groenenborger Campus (buidling T). Some pictures of the scientific instruments can be seen in the photo album below (by clicking the blue banner below the picture).
