University of Eastern Finland (UEF)

The University of Eastern Finland is one of the largest universities in Finland. Its research is ranked among the best in the world in several fields. As a multidisciplinary university, it trains experts for the various sectors of society.

Research carried out at the University of Eastern Finland is of a high international standard and has significant impact, with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity. Four global challenges have been identified through its interdisciplinary research and education: (1) Ageing, lifestyles and health; (2) Learning in a digitised society; (3) Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders; and (4) Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources.

UEF is a multidisciplinary university, which offers teaching in more than 100 major subjects. It has four faculties: the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Science and Forestry, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies.

UEF has extensive international relations and are involved in several international networks. Bilateral agreements of cooperation with approximately 100 universities abroad have been concluded.

The campuses are located in Joensuu and Kuopio. It has approximately 15,500 students and 2,500 staff members.

Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences is unique in Finland. It educates and trains experts and professionals for several central fields of health care and well-being and offers education in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biomedicine and health sciences (clinical nutrition, ergonomics, exercise medicine, nursing science and public health). Its research finds solutions to global challenges relating to ageing, health and well-being. The research activities addressing common chronic diseases in particular are of a high international standard.

Whilst the top-level international research areas are the Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, as well as the studies in Neurosciences, the Drug targeting technologies, focus on ocular treatments is currently positioned as an emerging research area.

School of Pharmacy

The School of Pharmacy is situating in Kuopio and currently provides undergraduate education to over 900 students.

It offers a post graduate training including drug discovery, drug delivery, medicinal chemistry, pharmaco-economics and effectiveness of treatment. It is known nationally and internationally for its particular strengths in the areas of: Applied Chemistry and Metabolic profiling, Effectiveness of treatments, Novel therapies, Pharmaceutical policy, Pharmacoeconomics, and Targeted drug delivery technologies.
