Bio
Daria Ardant is an Assistant Professor at the University of Antwerp, where she is developing regenerative construction methods that facilitate the reliable use of low-carbon materials. Trained as an architect, she completed her PhD at the Chair of Sustainable Construction at ETH Zurich in 2024, focusing on methods to tackle the inherent variability of earth-based materials and translate them into robust industrial processes. Her research bridges materials science and construction practice through a multiscale approach. Building on her expertise in earthen construction, she now aims to extend this robustness-by-design methodology to a broader family of geo-based and bio-based resources, to turn heterogeneous local materials into conventional building solutions that can be integrated into architectural practice and education.
Favourite (interior) architecture project
The Therme Vals by Peter Zumthor and the Hikma Complex by Mariam Issoufou illustrate two complementary approaches to locally grounded architecture. While Vals transforms local stone through light and texture into an immersive sensory experience, Hikma reinterprets local materials and building traditions through contemporary construction. Both demonstrate how architecture can emerge from the resources and culture of a place.
