Mieke Vandenbroucke

Mieke L.C. Vandenbroucke (°1988) is trained as an architectural engineer and obtained her PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2016 with a study on demountable building elements. Since 2026, she is an assistant professor in Interior Architecture at the Faculty of Design Sciences, University of Antwerp. Her research focuses on developing tools to quantify reversible building concepts and to support building actors in the transition toward a sustainable built environment. She is driven by reducing environmental impact through circular design approaches and the reuse of buildings and components. Previously, she worked as a project leader in nonprofit organisations. She was a jury member of the HERA Awards and was a visiting professor at UHasselt. She contributed to scientific committees on circular training programmes.

The transformation of Brussels’ WTC I and II towers turned outdated offices into a lively urban destination with sports, leisure, shops, greenery, a hotel and a rooftop bar. The designers approached the building as a ‘materials bank’, and through reversible design strategies, they ensured it remains flexible and ready for future adaptation.
