The research group GEOBIOLOGY performs fundamental and applied research at the intersection between Geology and Biology. Our prime objective is to generate profound insights about the interactions between the biosphere on the one hand, and the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere on the other hand. In doing so, we study investigate the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and other elements within the Earth System from nanometer to global length scales, to achieve an improved understanding of how natural ecosystems function in the past, present, and future.
As part of our societal mission, we adopt a "solution-based" perspective, where we investigate how biology and natural systems can offer biology-based solutions to important societal challenges (climate mitigation, climate adaption, biobased economy, new bio-technological processes and circular nanomaterials, bio-electricity, atmospheric CO2 drawdown).
Geobiology is involved in a wide range of projects, not only in Belgium but also internationally.
