Roundtable on Ports and Megainfrastructures in Colombia - 4 December 2024
Researchers from the FWO ContainerHaven project hosted a roundtable at Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá to discuss the regulatory and socio-environmental challenges facing Colombian ports. Academics and civil-society representatives discussed port governance, the effects of infrastructure on local communities and territories, and the importance of ecological justice and nature's rights.
Oppression, Resistance and Solidarity: Palestine and Beyond - 12 November 2024
This seminar explored the connections between oppression and resistance in Palestine and elsewhere, emphasising the importance of solidarity across struggles and social movements. Guest speaker Haris Zargar and discussant Maha Abdallah examined the global structures underlying violence and human rights violations while highlighting voices and movements working towards freedom.
Workshops on Community Participation in Development Activities in Lesotho - 7 and 14 June 2024
Two online workshops examined community participation in diamond-mining and dam-building projects in the Lesotho Highlands. Researchers, legal experts, civil-society organisations, and development practitioners discussed the right to development, corporate human rights obligations, internal displacement, judicial activism, and the human rights dimensions of trade and investment. The findings contributed to further socio-legal research on affected communities.

Belgian Network of Junior Researchers in International Law Visits UAntwerp - 4 October 2024
The Belgian Network of Junior Researchers in International Law visited the University of Antwerp for a programme focused on creativity in international legal research. The event included presentations by University of Antwerp research groups, a workshop led by Professor Valentin Jeutner and a panel discussion with international legal scholars. It promoted cooperation between Belgian institutions and supported research-skills development among junior researchers.
Launch of the Emancipatory Human Rights Project - 17 April 2024
The Law and Development Research Group and Birzeit University’s Muwatin Institute launched the joint Emancipatory Human Rights research project. Supported by Enabel, the initiative examined how human rights can serve emancipatory purposes while resisting colonial exploitation. Planned activities included a Human Rights Factory for Palestinian youth, policy briefs, intercultural teaching, student exchanges, workshops, and seminars.
