Biomass production is an overarching topic in PLECO as it is the result of plant processes (for example phenology) and soil biogeochemistry (for example nutrient availability). Historically within PLECO, biomass production has been studied for bio-energy application of short-rotation coppice. However, in the last years a shift has been made towards studies on forest biomass production in relation to carbon sequestration, biomass production efficiency in terrestrial ecosystems and monitoring, assessment and modelling of the ecosystem production at the global scale. Even if we make our own measurements at selected long-term study site, research on biomass production is mainly done through analysis of global databases, remote sensing and modelling.
