Barbara Tan is Valorisation Manager for the Social Sciences and Humanities (SHW). She is the point of contact for researchers SHW who seek support when they want to transfer and exploit their scientific knowledge towards companies and/or other stakeholders. Together with the researcher and in close consultation with the entire team of the Valorisation Office, she is exploring a suitable valorisation trajectory. A valorisation trajectory may take several forms: a private research contract, a doctorate at the request of a company, an intellectual property license but also the creation of a private spin-off company is one of the possibilities. Barbara also looks for cooperation opportunities between business and research by connecting needs of companies with the expertise of researchers SHW.
Barbara has more then 20 years of experience in various aspects of higher education with focus on research, innovation and science and technology policy. She started her professional career as a researcher at the Center for Social Policy Herman Deleeck, where she published about the persistent social inequalities in Flemish higher education. Then she became advisor for education and innovation at the employers' organization Voka-Vlaams Economische Verbond for almost 6 years, where she built a wide network of business contacts. Then she returned to the University of Antwerp at the Department of Research and Innovation (ADOC) where she first assisted the integration of the 2 cycli from the university colleges into the University of Antwerp and later developed expertise on attracting external funding for research. The focus on external funding is now mainly on the VLAIO subsidy channels and EFRO and Interreg.
