'God in school? A legal inquiry into the right to reasonable accommodation of religion and belief in educational institutions.' 01/10/2017 - 30/09/2019

Abstract

The research aims at answering the central research question whether a right to reasonable accommodation of religion and belief should be recognized in the Flemish educational context. This question will be guided by two sub-questions. 1. Which principles can constitute the normative basis of the legal concept of reasonable accommodation of religious diversity in educational institutions? 2. Which difficulties may reasonable accommodation of religious diversity pose in the educational setting and how can they be addressed?

Discretion and work conditionality in welfare practice in Europe. 01/01/2014 - 31/12/2017

Abstract

This research project has a substantive and a methodological goal. With regard to the substantive goal, the investigation of the implementation of activation practices has remained largely one-sided. We aim to explore interactions between three levels of characteristics: client, social worker and agency. The main research question is, 'How important is the discretionary freedom of social assistance agencies and social workers in deciding on a claimant's duty to work?'

The liberalisation of the labour market: an existential erosion of social law. Sub-contracting: the ultimate social dumping? 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2010

    Abstract

The globalisation and Europeanisation of economic relations is generating a liberalised labour market. Cross-border sub-contracting pyramids have been created using EU legislation, particularly on the free movement of services. When such sub-contracting pyramids mask false self-employment, they seriously undermine social corrections to the free labour market. The research seeks to obtain a better legal insight into these mechanisms to submit effective legal remedies to policy makers.
