Expertise
Abstract
Walter Benjamin is widely recognized as one of the most original and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. His writings, spanning philosophy, literary criticism, cultural theory, and po-litical essay, have shaped debates across the humanities for decades and continue to generate an extensive international scholarship. Yet despite this scholarly attention, a central concept that runs as a quiet but persistent thread through his entire work has never been systematically exam-ined: the notion of 'Lehre'. The German word 'Lehre' is difficult to translate precisely, it can mean teaching, doctrine, in-struction, or theory, and Benjamin uses it in a way that deliberately resists exact definition. He invokes it repeatedly, always without explanation, as a kind of ideal horizon for his thinking: in his theory of translation, in his essays on the writer Franz Kafka, and in his reflections on philo-sophical writing itself. This studied vagueness is not an oversight. As Benjamin's close friend, the Jewish scholar Gershom Scholem, noted, Benjamin understood 'Lehre' as a direct transla-tion of the Hebrew Torah, which encompasses not only the written scripture of the five books of Moses, but also the oral tradition of its continuous interpretation, transmission, and application across generations. This insight points toward a dimension of Benjamin's thinking that has re-ceived surprisingly little scholarly attention: his deep engagement with Jewish textual tradition as a resource for rethinking the relationship between language, knowledge, and truth. This dissertation provides the first systematic account of the concept of 'Lehre' across Benja-min's entire oeuvre and argues for its central importance in understanding both his theoretical project and his distinctive mode of writing. It pursues three interconnected arguments. First, it shows that Benjamin turns to Jewish textual tradition, understood in a broadly secular rather than strictly religious sense, as an alternative to the dominant modern model of knowledge as timeless, formalizable, and expressible in neutral scientific language. For Benjamin, truth cannot be separated from the specific language in which it is articulated or from the historical moment in which it appears. Second, the dissertation argues that 'Lehre' functions in Benjamin's work as an implicit framework for thinking across disciplinary and generic boundaries, bringing together philosophy and literature, abstract argument and narrative image, in a way that conventional aca-demic categories cannot capture. This helps explain why Benjamin's writing is so difficult to classify and why it has proven so productive across such different fields of inquiry. Third, 'Leh-re' is not only an epistemological concept but also a practical one: it concerns not just the articu-lation of truth but its transmission and application in collective life, the question of how knowledge becomes wisdom, and how theory connects to emancipatory practice. Methodologically, the project combines close reading of Benjamin's texts with intellectual-historical analysis of the Jewish and philosophical traditions he draws on. The corpus is orga-nized chronologically, tracing the concept from Benjamin's earliest writings through his major works of the 1920s to his late essays and the unfinished Arcades Project. By connecting two research strands that have thus far developed largely independently, the study of Jewish influ-ences on Benjamin's thought and the analysis of his representational practice, the project opens a new perspective on the coherence of a body of work long described as irreducibly fragmentary. It also contributes to broader questions in the humanities about the relationship between form and knowledge, and about the role that Jewish intellectual and textual traditions, long marginal-ized within the dominant currents of modern European philosophy, play in the formation of modern critical thought.Onderzoeker(s)

Abstract

Abstract
Onderzoeker(s)
