Study

Please note that although we do offer courses in English, most of them are at master level. If you are an incoming bachelor exchange student, please make sure if it is OK for your university to have a more interdisciplinary course package in Antwerp, meaning a mix of bachelor courses from the study fields of the Faculty of Science.

Nomination and application

Your home university should first nominate you to our central International Relations Office. After successful application and acceptance, students can prepare their study programme in Antwerp taking into account the following important items.

Language requirements

It is essential for a successful stay as an Erasmus exchange student in the Faculty of Science that you have a good command of English, oral as well as written. Your level in English should be at least B2 (CEFR levels) prior to arrival. Kindly consult the application instructions for details regarding the necessary attestation.

Establishing your study programme at the University of Antwerp

We expect you to take up 30 credits per semester (with a bare minimum of 20 credits).

Your study program proposal will be evaluated based on your study history (Transcript of Records). If these conditions are not met, you will not be allowed to take the course.

In terms of the level of courses, the following academic experience is required:

  • Bachelor courses (course codes starting with 1): you have successfully completed at least 120 ECTS or two full academic years of tertiary education upon arrival in Antwerp.
  • Master courses (course codes starting with 2): you have successfully completed at least 180 ECTS or six semesters of tertiary education upon arrival in Antwerp as well as meeting the course prerequisites.

Please note that as a rule, bachelor students take bachelor courses, and master students take master courses. Our English-taught courses are mostly at master level.

As a bachelor student you can take up master courses if you have successfully completed a minimum of three years in a bachelor’s programme, equivalent to 180 ECTS credits, at the time of your arrival.

Some courses may also require specific prior knowledge, so please review the prerequisites for each course.

Although we advise against it, you are allowed to take up to two courses at one other faculty. This is not recommended given the high likelihood of rostering conflicts. The other faculty also needs to approve the students’ suitability for the course beforehand.

If you wish to choose a course that is taught in Dutch, we request that you have a profound knowledge of the Dutch language, that allows you to follow Dutch courses on an academic level.
