The Beacon is a community of companies and knowledge institutions that joined forces to provide digital solutions for the challenges of our cities, ports and industries. Collaboration is the key concept within our community, and is fostered in three ways: (1) by providing workspaces and meeting facilities for our members to work together, (2) by connecting the members of the community with each other and outside stakeholders through matchmaking and events; and (3) by initiating joint innovation projects at which multiple members participate, in order to act together. More than 25 members, including founding partners University of Antwerp and Imec, have a physical presence in the six-store The Beacon building.

Many of the members of the community are active in high-tech segments such as Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things.

For instance the research group IDLab specialized in Internet technologies and data sciences.

The Beacon also houses the Design Sciences Hub, a young research and innovation lab of the University of Antwerp that, together with the Faculty of Design Sciences, is setting up research projects on urban challenges and 'wicked problems' with a focus on built environment, urban health and mobility.
