Be aware that each of the grant types is associated with a particular application process and is subject to particular regulations (eligibility conditions, duration, etc.).

Research Foundation Flanders (FWO)

The Research Foundation Flanders (“Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen” - FWO) provides researchers affiliated with a Flemish host institution with various travel grants for outgoing mobility to encourage mobility among researchers and international contacts between research groups. The following grants support researchers who wish to spend a short period abroad:

  • Grant for participation in a conference abroad 
  • Grant for a short study visit abroad 
  • Grant for participation in a workshop or course abroad

YUFE Staff Programme

The YUFE Staff Programme offers mobility and training opportunities for staff members of all universities within the YUFE Alliance. This includes short staff visits and long-term affiliations, (virtual) language courses etc.

Support Young Researchers

The Support Young Researchers grant (“subsidie Omkadering van Jonge Onderzoekers” - OJO) supports postdoctoral researchers for international research visits with a training component.

  • Grant for a long stay at an ERC Grantee abroad for researchers who are planning to submit an ERC grant application (Starting, Consolidator, or Advanced)

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships supports the international mobility of postdoctoral researchers to acquire new knowledge, skills and competences. 

Two types of Fellowships exist:   

  • European Fellowships (EF) for postdoctoral researchers moving within or coming to Europe for 1 to 2 years.  

  • Global Fellowships (GF) for postdoctoral researchers who wish to work outside Europe (including a mandatory return period of one year to an institution in Europe). As to the European Fellowships financial support is provided for a period of 1 to 2 years, for Global Fellowships this is 2 to 3 years.

Fullbright Program

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program awards scholarships to Belgian students and scholars to conduct research and/or lecture in any academic field at an accredited US institution for a period between three months and one academic year (9 months).

The Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF)

Every year, the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) offers more than 65 Fellowships to Belgian students and researchers to allow doctoral or post-doctoral researchers to spend one year at a research institution of their choice in the United States. Please note that it is necessary to apply for a BAEF scholarship in the year preceding the academic year during which one wants to go to the United States.
