Dutch is the official language of Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Most people in Antwerp have a good knowledge of English, but being able to speak basic Dutch when studying at the University of Antwerp is an advantage.

This is why the university organises a ‘Survival on Arrival’ course – an introductory Dutch course for exchange students. During this course, you will learn the basic Dutch needed for everyday situations: how to introduce yourself, order in pubs and restaurants, ask for information, communicate in shops, and use public transport. The language course also introduces you to the culture of Belgium and Antwerp. After the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance. Please note that you do not receive any credits for this course.

This course is designed for all exchange students who have been admitted to a study programme at the University of Antwerp. You will receive all necessary information, including how to sign up and the price, by email once you have been fully accepted.

• First semester: 11, 12, 13, 16 and 17 September 2024 in the afternoon
• Second semester: will be announced at the end of the year
  

Right before the start of each semester, all exchange students are welcomed during Orientation Day. Make sure you don’t miss it!

• Second semester: 6 February 2025

During Orientation Day, we will familiarise you with the university and with living and studying in Antwerp.

• You will receive your student card and a welcome gift
• You will meet the ESN Antwerp team and STAN, the city of Antwerp’s student service office 
• It's a great opportunity to ask any questions about your classes or practical matters to the university staff
• And of course: you’ll get to know other international students
