Master in Biology

Choose your specialisation

At the University of Antwerp, you can choose between several specialisations regarding the Master in Biology. We offer programmes in Dutch as well as in English.

Master in Biology: Global Change Biology (English)

This master focuses on the underlying drivers and the far-reaching consequences of global change. You will learn about the multifaceted nature of global change, encompassing changes in climate, land use, biogeochemical cycles and the behaviour and functioning of organisms. You’ll discover how human activities influence ecosystems and biodiversity, and how such changes impact all levels of biological organisation, from molecules to ecosystems.

Master in Biology: Biodiversity: Conservation and Restoration (English)

In this Master programme, you’ll acquire insight into the causes and consequences of the current worldwide loss of plants, animals and other species, as well as the theory and practice of managing endangered species and the conservation and restoration of habitats. Links with society, for example, biodiversity policy, legislation and international treaties, will also be highlighted. You will undertake an internship with an external organisation involved in conservation and/or restoration.

Master in Biology: Evolution and Behaviour Biology (Dutch)

This Master programme gives you an in-depth understanding of the origins of biodiversity. You will learn how the biotic and abiotic environment causes plastic, epigenetic or genetic changes in morphology, physiology and behaviour, and how these changes affect the functioning of individuals, populations and communities. Thanks to your master's thesis, you will participate in high-level research focused on the behaviour and evolution of (mostly vertebrate) animals studied in their natural environment. This programme is only taught in Dutch.

Master of Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management (English)

Are you fascinated by marine biology and eager to explore the workings of oceans, lakes, and rivers? Do you dream of studying in an international context? Then the unique and versatile Master programme 'Oceans and Lakes' offered by University of Antwerp, University of Ghent, and VUB is exactly what you're looking for.
