My most successful line of research originates from the discovery during my PhD work of a new basic carboxypeptidase in human plasma which provides an important link between the complex processes of coagulation and fibrinolysis. This novel enzyme (named carboxypeptidase U or TAFI) has become during the last decades a “hot topic” in all international congresses on coagulation and fibrinolysis – with reviews in the most important journals in the field – and provides opportunities for novel treatment (acute treatment and/or prevention) of patients with thrombo-embolic disease, such as acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, ischemic stroke and deep vein thrombosis
