IOB has built a global alumni network, connecting  of more than 1,300 alumni across 100+ countries. Alumni engagement is supported through a range of communication channels and spaces, including a website LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, newsletters, blogs & alumni magazine, in its 56th edition (launched in 2007).

Since 2012, 61 Alumni activities were organised in 17 countries, ranging from refresher courses to networking events in partner countries and in Belgium. Alumni presented their own work at IOB alumni seminars and played an active role in IOB research education and outreach. The Alumni Impact Award, launched in 2018 and again in 2026, showcases alumni contributions to development.

Alongside a global online IOB community, IOB set up informal country chapters in Belgium, Tanzania, DRC, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nicaragua, Vietnam, and Indonesia,.
Besides geographical networks, DEM hosts Communitor+, a knowledge-based community of practice focused on monitoring and evaluation.

Alumni engagement starts before graduation. The Life After IOB programme introduces students to the alumni network, activities & policy during their studies, facilitating a smooth transition into the IOB community.
