- Option 1.1: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (highly recommended for starting PhD researchers in Social Sciences and Humanities)
In this session you will get a general introduction regarding the processing of personal data a.k.a. GDPR and scientific research. What is GDPR? Why is it relevant, what do you have to do as a researcher and what information is available? The link with Research Data Management and securing your data will also be covered.
- Option 1.2: Rethinking science in a knowledge society
This session will discuss how scientific research is intertwined with broader societal developments. After outlining some key steps in the emergence of modern science and the research university, it will explore how research is currently being reshaped by developments and trends such as interdisciplinarity, technoscience, citizen science and open science.
- Option 1.3: Safety & environment - Tips and tricks in the lab (highly recommended for starting PhD researchers in laboratories)
Do you work with chemicals in a lab during your doctoral research? Do you enjoy tracking down an exceptional pathogen or do you think you've discovered a new vaccine? You are doing extraordinary and socially relevant work! Make sure it also stays safe for you and your environment! We want to help you correctly assess the risks and emissions associated with your research. We would like to teach you how to mitigate these hazards. PARALLEL SESSION 2
- Option 2.1: More insight into your competence profile: creating a personal development plan (highly recommended for starting PhD researchers)
This session helps doctoral researchers take off with the competence profile of the doctoral study programme. We will help you design a personal development plan, which will increase your self-awareness about competences and will stimulate reflection on your individual professional goals. Special attention will go towards the aim of the University of Antwerp to train doctoral researchers in both research and transferable skills.
- Option 2.2: A practical guide to Open Access publishing
Publishing scientific output in Open Access is gaining importance in the (inter)national scientific landscape. In this session, you will be handed a practical guide to Open Access publishing, such as what types of Open Access there are, how to publish Open Access for free, funder requirements and open licenses. With this knowledge, you will be able to navigate through all of the different options.
- Option 2.3: Broaden your horizon with a joint PhD
Are you looking for something extra that could really boost your PhD research? If you are interested in a more (inter)national PhD experience, maybe a joint PhD will be something for you. In this info session we will show the benefits and practicalities of a joint PhD and also individual questions will be addressed.
