Objectives and target audience

Researchers and lecturers who struggle with the pronunciation of English in general or with the pronunciation of specific words.

Programme

Some of the topics dealt with are:

  • problematic sounds in English (e.g. ‘th’, ‘ou’, ‘a’, ‘r’, etc.)
  • syllable stress (e.g. innovative)

Method

Since researchers and lecturers have busy schedules, we try to keep the contact time to a minimum. We use the two 2-hour classes to practise those specific sounds and words participants typically struggle with.

Additionally, all participants get an individual appointment with the teacher to practise pronunciation in more spontaneous speech about their own field. This way we can ensure that all participants receive individual feedback and have the opportunity to remedy their own specific problems.

Language materials

The course focuses particularly on those pronunciation problems that are typical of non-native researchers and lecturers with a good level of English. The table of contents is built around a selection of their most common mistakes.

Timing and organisation

The course consists of four lesson hours: 2 two-hour lessons dedicated to the input and practice of specific sounds and patterns. Additionally, participants are invited to a 30-minute individual session, in which they will give a 10-minute individual presentation, which is followed by 20 minutes of personal feedback and practice.

Registration

The course costs €95 for participants affiliated with an AUHA institution and €110 for non-AUHA participants. ZAP and OP3 members of the University of Antwerp can take this course for free. Please check Pintra.

Please note that UAntwerp and OP3 staff members have priority for this course.

Language courses are exempt from VAT in accordance with article 44§2.4°.
