Objectives and target audience
Researchers and lecturers who struggle with the use of academic English vocabulary in papers and articles or who would like to refresh their academic vocabulary knowledge.
Some of the topics dealt with are:
- the right register: formal versus informal language use (e.g. get versus acquire)
- (near-)synonyms (e.g. however and nevertheless)
- vocabulary used in papers, articles, presentations and lectures (e.g. to ascertain)
- typical collocations (e.g. a classic example of)
Since researchers and lecturers have busy schedules, we try to keep the contact time to a minimum. As a result, in class the main focus is on tips, tricks and strategies for learning different kinds of vocabulary. Participants are expected to practise at home, doing additional exercises in the coursebook and online.
The course content is based on the analysis of the problems found in papers and articles written by non-native speakers. The table of contents is built around a selection of their most common vocabulary mistakes. Most exercises are based on authentic extracts from papers, articles, etc.
Timing and organisation
The course consists of six lesson hours: 3 two-hour lessons dedicated to the input and practice of typical non-subject-specific academic English vocabulary.
Additionally, participants have the opportunity to practise the vocabulary individually online.
The course costs €80 for participants affiliated with an AUHA institution and €90 for non-AUHA participants. ZAP and OP3 members of the University of Antwerp can take this course for free. Please check Pintra.
Please note that UAntwerp and OP3 staff members have priority for this course.
Language courses are exempt from VAT in accordance with article 44§2.4°.
Registration is no longer possible.
