Level 1
What will you learn on this course?
- You’ll acquire the basics of Italian grammar so that you can express yourself correctly and clearly in the present and, to some extent, in the past (passato prossimo).
- You’ll learn basic Italian vocabulary to use in everyday situations. Subjects include introductions, ordering in a restaurant, free time, asking for and explaining directions.
- You’ll practise speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis is on speaking, with particular attention paid to correct use of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Self-study at home involves you reviewing material and doing exercises, so that in class you can take an active role in practice activities and interactive exercises, supported by your language teacher.
Additional practice materials
In addition to the coursebook, the language teacher brings supplementary materials to class, aiming to get you acquainted with culture and daily life in Italy. The coursebook also includes interactive materials and activities that you can use for self-study at home.
Level 2
What will you learn on this course?
- You’ll acquire the basics of Italian grammar so that you can express yourself correctly and clearly in the present and the past (passato prossimo + imperfetto), and you’ll also be introduced to other moods and tenses such as the imperative (imperativo tu), the present participle (gerundio) and the conditional (condizionale).
- You’ll refresh your basic knowledge and broaden your vocabulary. Subjects include shopping, talking about your family, describing someone, giving advice, and making arrangements for social activities.
- You’ll practise speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis is on speaking, with particular attention paid to correct use of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Self-study at home involves you reviewing material and doing exercises, so that in class you can take an active role in practice activities and interactive exercises.

Level 3
What will you learn on this course?
- You delve further into Italian grammar so you can express yourself correctly and clearly in different moods and tenses: further distinction between passato prossimo and imperfetto, modal verbs in the past tense, the imperative (imperativo Lei and voi), the future tense (futuro semplice) and the subjunctive in the present tense (congiuntivo presente). You’ll also learn to give advice, talk about needs, express preferences and formulate assumptions.
- You’ll broaden your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Subjects include talking about a trip, naming and describing food and tastes, naming body parts and talking about health problems (e.g. at the doctor's or pharmacist's), as well as talking about different types of homes.

What will you learn on this course?
- You'll broaden your knowledge of Italian grammar with new forms and structures: trapassato prossimo, combined pronouns, the conditional in the past tense (condizionale passato), the subjunctive in the past tense (congiuntivo passato), the subjunctive in the imperfect past tense (congiuntivo imperfetto) and constructions with come se.
- You’ll learn to make comparisons, formulate complaints, make plans, express assumptions, all in real-life situations, and retell the storyline of a book or film.
- You’ll practise speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis is on speaking, with particular attention paid to correct use of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Regular self-study involving exercises at home mean you can continue to repeat, communicate and actively participate in class, with the support of the language teacher.

Level 5
What will you learn on this course?
- You’ll complete your knowledge of Italian grammar and learn to use more complex structures: all hypothesis sentences (periodi ipotetici) and the subjunctive in the past perfect tense (congiuntivo trapassato).
- You’ll learn to present arguments, state advantages and disadvantages, explicitly agree or strongly disagree, and describe the characteristics of places. You’ll also delve into the use of comparisons and superlatives (comparativi e superlativi).
- You’ll continue practising all skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), focusing on fluent and nuanced speaking skills.
- Regular self-study involving exercises at home means you can easily take part in class discussions and complex communication in Italian.
