A DOI is a crucial tool for scientific communication, used for identifying and retrieving content. The library has a membership with Crossref, which not only assigns a DOI but also grants greater visibility to the content.
Dissertations
The library ensures that all UAntwerpen PhD theses are automatically assigned a DOI. A separate application is not required. This assignment and the uploading of metadata to Crossref are financed by the library and are completely free for the researcher.
Consequently, it is no longer necessary to request an ISBN and a depot number. The ISBN is only used to simplify the distribution of publications between publishers and bookstores. Since a doctoral thesis is not commercialized or distributed through trade channels by UAntwerpen, the ISBN does not add any value to the dissertation.
