The third edition of the VLIR-UOS ICP North Workshop by the ICP Master of Statistics (MStat, UHasselt) and Master of Epidemiology (MEPI, UAntwerp) took place virtually on the 07 May 2020. This was attended by 46 participants comprising students, researchers and staff.
Four alumni and/or partners of either masters programmes were invited to share their experiences, research activities and contemporary research results in statistics and epidemiology in their home country. This year’s guests joined us online from DRCongo (dr. Junior Matangila – Department of Tropical Medicine, University of Kinshasa), Indonesia (dr. Achmad Efendi – Universitas Brawijaya), Philippines (dr. Joey Genevieve Martinez – Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology), and Tanzania (dr. Vito Baraka – National Institute for Medical Research).
To further inspire the students on how acquired knowledge can be useful in practice, a special talk on perspectives of the 2019-nCov outbreak in Belgium was given by dr. Pietro Coletti, a postdoctoral researcher at UHasselt. This highlighted the important role played by statisticians and epidemiologists (which transcends boundaries) in the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
VLIR-UOS offers International Course Programs (ICP) scholarships for students from the South since 1993 for MStat and since 2007 for MEPI. Please check www.vliruos.be for more information.
