Dutch language course for international students

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences offers a free Dutch language course for its international students. By taking these language classes, students in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy (REVAKI) will be able to perform better and learn more during their clinical internships. An additional advantage of taking Dutch language courses is that you will more likely be accepted to do an internship at your preferred internship site.

The intensive, tailor-made and high-quality language course is organized by Linguapolis, the university’s languages centre.

Objective

To acquire a basic knowledge of Dutch that they can apply in everyday life. By working on their Dutch language skills from the start, you prepare to speak Dutch to patients during your clinical internships in Master 1 and Master 2.

Content

This course brings you up to ERK level A2. At the end of the course, you will be able to manage everyday situations. You will be able to introduce yourself, talk about your family, go shopping, meet up with friends, tell about the recent past and make plans for the future, ...

Target group

International students of the Epidemiology and Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy programmes without prior knowledge of Dutch. The maximum number of participants is 21. Students from all years can register, but priority will be given to 1st master REVAKI students, then to students of the REVAKI bridging programme and then to 1st master students in Epidemiology and 2nd master REVAKI students. This last group should note that it will be difficult to combine the interuniversity courses with the language classes. Students with prior knowledge of Dutch can participate in an intake in August or September (dates to follow) with Linguapolis in order to assess their language level.

Approach

In the classroom, there is a focus on active working methods and practical classroom exercises. You can have a look at this video to get a better idea. Even with an effective study method, learning a new language cannot be achieved without considerable effort. This means you need to review the course materials before and after class during self-study. We recommend at least one hour of self-study for every hour of class (45 hours). Take into account that you have to combine this self study with your study load for the Epidemiology / Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy programme.

Timetable

13 weeks, starting early October 2023 until mid-March 2024. Evening classes from 6:30 to 9:30 pm or from 6:00 to 9:00 pm (3 hours per week). The exact dates will be chosen according to the availability of the teacher and will be aligned with the students’ timetables. The exact dates will be published mid-September 2023.
