Alumni evening Political Science

Are you a Political Science alumnus or alumna? We invite you to an inspiring alumni evening on Thursday 7 May 2026, from 7 pm to 10 pm, at the Stadscampus, in the R building (Rodestraat 14, 2000 Antwerp).

You can look forward to a fascinating lecture with two speakers - Seeking likes and authenticity: politicians on social media. Afterwards, there will be time to catch up with other alumni, professors and current students during a cosy reception.

Politicians on social media

About 20 years ago, the first politicians presented themselves to their followers on social media. Since then, this has become an increasingly important form of political communication. What has changed in those years and why do politicians invest so much time and energy in it? Which politicians are successful and what dangers lurk in this form of interaction with voters?

Peter Van Aelst, professor of political communication, attempts to answer these questions on the basis of recent research, using numerous examples from his own country and the US.

Jos D'Haese, leader of the PVDA in the Flemish Parliament, is one of the most active Flemish politicians on social media. He responds to Peter's presentation and gives his view on the importance of social media for our democracy.
