Met de tweejaarlijkse scriptieprijs wil USAB onderzoek naar armoede en sociale ongelijkheid stimuleren. De thesis moet een thema behandelen dat duidelijk relevant is voor een beter begrip van, of de strijd tegen, armoede of andere vormen van sociale uitsluiting en ongelijkheid, nationaal of mondiaal. Dit kan zeer breed gaan: bijvoorbeeld sociaal werk, sociaal beleid, de platformeconomie, mensenrechten, onderwijs, gezondheidszorg, rechtvaardige transitie, energiearmoede, ... Inzendingen vanuit alle faculteiten van de Universiteit Antwerpen zijn welkom. De prijs omvat een oorkonde, ondersteuning door een lid van het academisch personeel om toe te werken naar een publicatie in een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift, en een budget van € 500 om de masterproef te presenteren op een wetenschappelijke conferentie en/of relevante boeken aan te kopen. De student zal worden uitgenodigd om een blogartikel te schrijven voor de USAB blog over armoede en sociale uitsluiting en mag de thesis voorstellen op een USAB-evenement.
Op 19/4/2024 reiken we de USAB scriptieprijs van 2024 uit tijdens ons netwerkevent.
Reglement
- De prijs wordt tweejaarlijks uitgereikt.
- Voor de prijs van 2026 komen masterproeven in aanmerking van studenten die een master(na master) hebben behaald aan de Universiteit Antwerpen in het academiejaar 2023-2024 en 2024-2025.
- De student moet minimaal 15/20 hebben behaald voor de masterproef, in eerste of in tweede zittijd.
- De thesis moet een thema behandelen dat duidelijk relevant is voor een beter begrip van, of de strijd tegen, armoede of sociale ongelijkheid in België, Europa, of mondiaal.
- De masterproef moet door de student of de (co-)promotor elektronisch worden ingediend ten laatste op 30 oktober 2025 bij mevr. Helma De Smedt (helma.desmedt@uantwerpen.be).
- De jury bestaat uit een panel met experts uit het vakgebied en leden van de Academische Werkgroep van USAB.
- De jury kan beslissen de prijs niet uit te reiken indien ze oordeelt dat geen enkele masterproef van voldoende kwaliteit werd ingediend die tegemoet komt aan de doelstellingen die USAB met de prijs nastreeft.

Information for foreign language students
With the biennial thesis prize, USAB aims to stimulate research on poverty and social inequality. The thesis should address a theme that is clearly relevant to a better understanding of, or the fight against, poverty or other forms of social exclusion and inequality, nationally or globally. This can be very broad: for example social work, social policy, the platformeconomy, human rights, education, health care, just transition, energy poverty, ... Submissions from all faculties of the University of Antwerp are welcome. The prize includes a certificate, support by a member of the academic staff to work towards a publication in a scientific journal, and a budget of € 500 to present the master thesis at a scientific conference and/or to purchase relevant books. The student will be invited to write a blog article for the USAB blog on poverty and social exclusion and to present the thesis at a USAB event.
Regulations
- The prize will be awarded biennially.
- For the 2026 prize, master theses are eligible from students who have obtained a master (after master) degree at the University of Antwerp in the academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.
- The student must have obtained at least 15/20 for the master's thesis (either during first or second examination period).
- The thesis must address a theme that is clearly relevant to a better understanding of, or the fight against, poverty or social inequality in Belgium, Europe or the world.
- The master thesis has to be submitted electronically by the student or the (co-)supervisor at the latest by October 30, 2025 to Mrs. Helma De Smedt (helma.desmedt@uantwerpen.be).
- The jury consists of a panel of experts from the field and members of the Academic Working Group of USAB.
- The jury can decide not to award the prize if it judges that no master thesis of sufficient quality has been submitted that meets the objectives that USAB is pursuing with the prize.
