Financing an Open Access article

When publishing Open Access articles researchers often have to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to the publisher. The University of Antwerp does not have a central budget to pay for Open Access costs.

Due to several transformative agreements however, authors do not have to pay APCs to the publishers or they get a discount. The University of Antwerp has such agreements with the following publishers:

The Company of Biologists

Read & Publish deal 2023-2025: no APC for corresponding authors of papers submitted in 2023-2025 in the journals Development, Journal of Cell Science and Journal of Experimental Biology

John Benjamins

Read & Publish deal 2023-2024: no APC for corresponding/first authors of papers submitted in 2023 or 2024 in all John Benjamins journals

Cambridge University Press

Read & Publish deal 2022-2024: no APC for corresponding/first authors in all Open Access journals (Gold or Hybrid)

MDPI

Institutional Open Access Program: 10% discount on APC in all journals

Some publishers work with "Subscribe to Open" models, where subscription payments convert gated access journals to full Open Access. The University of Antwerp has several "Subscribe to Open" subscriptions with publishers such as Liverpool University Press, Amsterdam University Press, etc.
