Campus Mutsaard and Campus Drie Eiken as living labs
CampusCool investigates how and where green infrastructure on the University of Antwerp campuses can most effectively contribute to reducing heat stress, improving thermal comfort and lowering cooling demand. Using Campus Mutsaard and Campus Drie Eiken as living labs, we will first identify thermal hotspots and then test targeted interventions such as additional trees and green façades. The project combines rapid, AI-supported scenario exploration with more detailed physics-based simulations of solar exposure, airflow and temperature. The aim is to quantify which interventions, at which locations and under which conditions, have the greatest effect, and to translate these insights into concrete design and decision-support guidance for future campus planning and redevelopment. CampusCool thus connects research, education and campus policy in a single evidence-based approach to climate adaptation.
