A pilot within the Linkeroever Klimaatneutraal programme

UAntwerp and the City of Antwerp are exploring a unique full-scale pilot that integrates carbon-capturing soil technology directly into new urban infrastructure.

A one-hectare section will be enriched with minerals, biochar and organic matter. This will transform sandy construction soil into a carbon-rich, water-retaining substrate that supports resilient and biodiverse vegetation.

As a living laboratory, the site will be monitored to measure carbon storage, soil development, water retention, and vegetation establishment. The pilot will explore how climate mitigation and adaptation can become an integral part of future infrastructure projects across Antwerp and its port.
