Carbon for soils

In Kenya, a new UAntwerpen-developed technology is used to restore degraded Kenyan farmland, using enhanced rock weathering, biochar and organic matter. The technology allows to capture atmospheric CO₂ while improving soil fertility, water retention and agricultural resilience.

This project will help to assess the full environmental impact of the novel approach by focusing on a detailed life cycle analysis that complements the current detailed assessment of soil health, crop growth, and carbon capture. This helps Kenyan farmers, researchers and partner organizations to shape locally relevant implementation strategies. The project will provide practical guidance for scalable carbon farming, soil restoration, and climate-smart agriculture across the region.
