Supervisors

Prof. Dr. Bruno Peeters - supervisor - initiator of the Centre of Excellence - spokesman 

Prof. Dr. Bruno Peeters spokesman of the DigiTax project, initiator of the Centre of Excellence, established in 2019, and supervisor of several phd research within DigiTax. He is a full professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp and the chairman and founder of Antwerp Tax Academy, leading a multidisciplinary tax research group of 55 members belonging to different faculties or institutes of the Antwerp University as well as other national and foreign universities.

 

Prof. Dr. Toon Calders - supervisor - initiator of the Centre of Excellence 

Prof. Dr. Toon Calders is initiator of the Centre of Excellence, established in 2019, and supervisor of several phd research within DigiTax. He is a full professor at the Science Faculty of the University of Antwerp, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, supervisor in the ADReM Data Lab, and member of Antwerp Tax Academy.

 

Prof. Dr. Ann Jorissen - supervisor - initiator of the Centre of Excellence

Prof. Dr. Ann Jorissen is initiator of the Centre of Excellence, established in 2019, and supervisor of several phd research within DigiTax. She is a full professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Antwerp and member of Antwerp Tax Academy. 

 

Prof. Dr. David Martens - supervisor - initiator of the Centre of Excellence 

Prof. Dr. David Martens is initiator of the Centre of Excellence, established in 2019, and supervisor of several phd research within DigiTax. He is a full of professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Engineering Management of the University of Antwerp, research director in the Applied Data Mining research group and member of Antwerp Tax Academy.

 

Prof. Dr. Anne Van de Vijver - supervisor - initiator of the Centre of Excellence

Prof. Dr. Anne Van de Vijver is initiator of the Centre of Excellence, established in 2019, and supervisor of several phd research within DigiTax. She is an associate professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp  and a member of Antwerp Tax Academy.

 

Prof. Dr. Sylvie De Raedt - supervisor 

Prof. Dr. Sylvie De Raedt is research manager and co-supervisor of  phd research in the DigiTax project. She is member of Antwerp Tax Academy and affiliated researcher at the Universities of Ghent and Hasselt.

 

Prof. Dr. Miet Vanderhallen - supervisor 

Prof. Dr. Miet Vanderhallen is co-supervisor of phd research in the DigiTax project. She is an associate professor of legal psychology at the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp and an assistent professor of criminology and legal psychology at the University of Maastricht. She is also a member of Antwerp Tax Academy.

Prof. Dr. Eva Lievens

Prof. Dr. Eva Lievens is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law & Criminology of Ghent University, where she leads the research group Law & Technology. She is a member of the Human Rights Centre, the Crime, Criminology & Criminal Policy Consortium and PIXLES (Privacy, Information Exchange, Law Enforcement & Surveillance).

Prof. Dr. Sylvie De Raedt 

Prof. Dr. Sylvie De Raedt is research manager and co-supervisor of Phd research within the DigiTax project. She is member of Antwerp Tax Academy and affiliated researcher at the Universities of Ghent and Hasselt. 

Researchers

Eva Baekelant

Eva Baekelant has a master's degree in (tax) law and  is a business tax consultant at EY.  Her research topic is “the virtual permanent establishment in international tax law”. Her supervisor is Prof. Anne Van de Vijver and her research is funded by EY.

Dieter Brughmans 

Dieter Brughmans is master in Electromechanical Engineering Technology and Master of Finance. His research topic is fraud detection with behavioural data. His supervisor is prof. David Martens and his research is funded by the University of Antwerp.   

Wouter Dister

Wouter Dister is master in Law and master in Tax Law. His research topic are the key success indicators of cooperative tax compliance for companies, using tax technology (namely the so called Tax Control Framework ). His supervisors are prof. Anne Van de Vijver and prof. Miet Vanderhallen and his research is funded by the University of Antwerp.

Marco Favier

Marco Favier is master in Mathematics. His research topic is Fairness in Machine Learning and his supervisor is prof. Toon Calders. His research is funded by AXA. 

 

 

Liesa Keunen 

Liesa Keunen is master in Communications Sciences and master in Law. Her research topic is: "tax audits on big data: exploring the legitimacy and limits in light of the prohibition of fishing expeditions”.  Her supervisors are prof. Eva Lievens (UGhent), prof. dr. Sylvie De Raedt and prof. Bruno Peeters and her research is funded by the FWO.

Daphne Lenders 

Daphne Lenders is Master in Artificial Intelligence. Her research topic is Fairness in Machine Learning. Her supervisors are prof. Toon Calders and dr. Sylvie De Raedt. Her research is funded by the University of Antwerp. 

Raphael Mazzine

Raphael Mazzine is master in Chemistry and former Data Scientist at IBM. His research topic is explainability in artificial intelligence models and his supervisor is prof. David Martens. His research is funded by the Flemish Government.

Pedro Moraya Baros

Pedro Moraya Baros is Master of Science (MSc) International Political Economy and Master of Arts, Government. His research topic is "International taxation and domestic politics: the choice for unorthodox methods for taxation policies"  and his supervisors are prof. Ann Jorissen and prof. Anne Van de Vijver.  

Mariya Otto 

Mariya Otto is master in Law and senior Corporate Tax Consultant at Deloitte. Her research topic is the challenge of transfer pricing methods in a digital economy. Her supervisors are prof. Bruno Peeters and Prof. Anne Van de Vijver and her research is funded by Deloitte. 

 

Karl Pauwels

Karl Pauwels is master in Law, master in financial management and master de spécialisation en droit fiscal. His reserch topic is the future of the ability-to-pay-taxes principle in fiscalibus. His supervisor is prof. Anne Van de Vijver an his research in funded by the University of Antwerp.  

Ewoenam Topko 

Ewoenam Tokpo is master in Computer Science. His research topic is Fairness in Machine Learning  and his supervisor is prof. Toon Calders. His research is funded by the Flemish Government.  

Michiel Van Roy

Michiel Van Roy is Master of Applied Economics: Business Economics. His research is about new business models, intangible assets, transfer pricing and tax disclosure. His supervisors are prof. Ann Jorissen, prof. Anne Van de Vijver and prof. David Martens. His research is funded by the University of Antwerp. 

Kimberly Van Sande 

Kimberly Van Sande is master in Law, master in Tax Law and lawyer at Tiberghien Lawyers . Her research topic is taxation of artificial intelligence. Her supervisors are prof. Bruno Peeters and prof. Anne Van de Vijver and her research is funded by Tiberghien Lawyers 

 

 

Tom Vermeire

Tom Vermeire is master in Business Engineering in Management Information Systems,. His research topic is Explainable Artificial Intelligence. His supervisor is prof. David Martens and his research is funded by AXA.

 

 

Former researchers

Jellis Vanhoeyveld 

Jellis Vanhoeyveld is master in Engineering Science (mathemactical engineering techniques) and was admitted to the degree of doctor in the Faculty of Applied Engineering after successfully defending his doctoral thesis on data maning for fraud detection. He was a post doctoral researcher at the DigiTax Research Center of Excellence. He is author of several publications in this field.
