Stefaan De Rynck is a Belgian civil servant of the European Commission. He previously worked in the areas of financial regulation and communication and as a spokesperson for several European Commissioners. He is currently the head of the Representation of the European Commission in Belgium. Before that, he was advisor to Michel Barnier, the head negotiator of the European Commission for Brexit. He studied in Leuven and Yale and has a PhD from the European University Institute in Firenze. He held visiting professorships at the College of Europe and Torino and currently at the KULeuven. 

As a close aide to Michel Barnier, Stefaan De Rynck had a front row seat in the Brexit negotiations. In his book Inside the Deal, he tells the EU’s side of the story and seeks to dispel some of the myths and spin that have become indelibly linked to the Brexit process. From the mood in the room to the technical discussions, he gives an unvarnished account of the deliberations and obstacles that shaped the final deal. 

Stefaan De Rynck’s lecture will be based on his book and his experience during the Brexit negotiations. The lecture is part of the course European Integration (Bachelor Political Science and Social-Economic Sciences; Bridging Program International Relations and Diplomacy), but also welcomes all other interested students and staff.

Momenteel staat hij aan het hoofd van de vertegenwoordiging van de Europese Commissie in België. Daarvoor was hij adviseur van Michel Barnier, de hoofdonderhandelaar van de Europese Commissie voor Brexit. Hij studeerde in Leuven en Yale en is gepromoveerd aan het Europees Universitair Instituut in Florence. Hij bekleedde gasthoogleraarschappen aan het Europacollege en Torino en momenteel aan de KULeuven.

Als naaste medewerker van Michel Barnier zat Stefaan De Rynck op de eerste rij bij de Brexit-onderhandelingen. In zijn boek Inside the Deal vertelt hij de kant van de EU en probeert hij enkele mythes en spinsels te ontkrachten die onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn geraakt met het Brexit-proces. Van de stemming in de kamer tot de technische besprekingen, hij geeft een onverbloemd verslag van de beraadslagingen en obstakels die het uiteindelijke akkoord hebben gevormd.

De lezing van Stefaan De Rynck is gebaseerd op zijn boek en zijn ervaringen tijdens de Brexit-onderhandelingen. De lezing maakt deel uit van het vak Europese Integratie (Bachelor Politieke Wetenschappen en Sociaal-Economische Wetenschappen; schakelprogramma Internationale Betrekkingen en Diplomatie), maar ook alle andere geïnteresseerde studenten en medewerkers zijn welkom.
