UA Building Z - Faculty of Applied Engineering Sciences

Architectural competition by UAntwerpen, winning project:   Accommodation of the Faculty of Applied Engineering of the UA at the Campus Groenenborger in Wilrijk, awarded to DMT architects via an architecture competition organized by the UA with the assistance of the Antwerp City Architect.  The complex program of very different technical labs, classrooms, offices and meeting rooms was realized within the boundaries of a strict master plan with 'park stamps' in accordance with a residential neighborhood. Despite the limited budget, the high requirements of almost passive construction, phased execution and interchangeable interpretations were linked to a study of intelligent prefabrication with high-quality finishing.

Research questions.

1. -How can a complex multifunctional and semi-industrial building fit into a master plan with ‘park stamps’ in a residential neighborhood?

2. -How to build intelligently and cost-effectively with the lowest possible energetic impact?

3. -How may critical methodologies of design and fabrication processes facilitate an innovative and creative relationship between design practice and industry ?

Impact.
