Mission

Starting from a commitment to both research and education, ADS acts as the central expertise and information center on doctoral policy and doctoral education at the University of Antwerp.

DRIVERS

  • Development & training
We organise a mandatory and personalised doctoral study programme to encourage PhD researchers to develop a wide range of competences. Through the doctoral study programme, we increase the self-reflection of PhD researchers regarding these competences and prepare them for their further professional career, inside or outside of academia.
  • Reporting & analysis
We develop, implement and manage efficient processes and systems to capture information on individual PhD trajectories (including joint PhDs) as well as more generic data on the PhD process and the doctoral study programme at UAntwerp, and to report, monitor and analyse adequately on the basis thereof.
  • Information, advice & solutions
We provide information and advice in relation to doctoral education at UAntwerp and offer administrative, content-related and psychosocial support to UAntwerp PhD researchers in all stages of the PhD process. We are responsible for the development and support of the university’s policy regarding the guidance, training and support of PhD researchers. In addition, we provide support for the policy implementation on all levels. We strive to provide high-quality and accessible service, hereby taking into account the diversity of the PhD researchers and their trajectories.
  • Visibility & impact
We contribute to the development of excellent researchers and versatile, highly educated professionals who can play a meaningful role in their further career on the academic or non-academic labour market. As a centre of expertise, we actively participate in collaborations across different services within the university and in projects on all themes that affect PhD researchers and the PhD process. We represent UAntwerp in external bodies (such as the VLIR working group Doctoral Schools) and in (inter)national collaborations and projects concerning early career researchers. This allows us, on the one hand, to help shaping the (inter)national policy on the development of PhD researchers and, on the other hand, to improve the UAntwerp policy, based on good practices at other universities.
  • Expanding opportunities
We maximise PhD researchers’ opportunities by informing them proactively on the diverse options regarding the completion of the doctoral study programme, interuniversity collaboration, their post-PhD career, etc. and put our expertise as well as financial means at their disposal (educational credit, OJO financing …).
  • Reaching out
We are very active within UAntwerp’s international networks (YUFE, YERUN, EUA-CDE …) and carry out projects together with colleagues from these networks. We highly focus on interuniversity collaboration with the Flemish partner institutions regarding the support of young researchers. We maintain close relations with business partners and their associations and bring them into contact with our PhD researchers.
  • Safeguarding compliance
We translate the regulatory framework efficiently and effectively (such as UAntwerp’s PhD regulations) and offer solutions and support where necessary so that decisions can be taken in an informed and transparent manner.
