You are cordially invited to the Seventh Else Lasker-Schüler Lecture:
Re-reading Das Hebräerland (1937): The Zeugmatic Interplay between the Ideological and the Aesthetic
Wednesday, 11 June 2025, 19:00 Israel time
(18:00 CEST)
At the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem — and via Zoom
Prof. Giddon Ticotsky (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) will explore the gap between imagination and reality in Else Lasker-Schüler’s Das Hebräerland (“The Land of the Hebrews”), reading it as an expression of the challenges faced by immigrants and newcomers to the land. He will examine the work’s hybrid stance between prose and poetry, secularity and sanctity, while highlighting the tension between aesthetic vision and ideological commitment. The talk will also trace the reception of the book — and of Lasker-Schüler herself — in pre-state Palestine and in modern Hebrew literature.
Greetings: Dr. Irene Aue Ben David (Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem)
Chair: Prof. Vivian Liska (University of Antwerp, Belgium & The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
