Sustainable mobility is a leading paradigm in transport research and policy. One of the topics that attracts considerable attention is the modal split of cities. A critical assessment was made of several ways to measure the modal split of urban areas and a new approach was proposed. Furthermore, the research group is involved in the citizen science project ‘Straatvinken’ in which more than 1,500 citizens counted traffic (www.straatvinken.be). Finally, several sustainable mobility initiatives are discussed by members of the Research Group for Urban Development.
