De European Research Council heeft tot doel (kennis)grensverleggend onderzoek te financieren, onafhankelijk van thematische prioriteiten en dit in alle disciplines. Onderzoeksvoorstellen worden enkel beoordeeld op basis van excellentie.
Het betreft hier prestigieuze Europese onderzoeksfinanciering die openstaat voor onderzoekers uit alle disciplines en met alle nationaliteiten. De ERC-grant moet worden opgenomen in een Europese gastinstelling, maar kan worden verleend aan onderzoekers van alle nationaliteiten.
De ERC steunt momenteel vijf types van onderzoekstoelagen waarvoor jaarlijks oproepen tot onderzoeksvoorstellen worden gepubliceerd.
